Eadestown ladies crowned Senior Champions

Eadestown 2-12: Confey 2-8

Eadestown ladies won their first Senior Championship in Moorefield on Saturday last defeating the reigning champions Confey. It was Eadestowns first appearance in a senior final. Both teams were well prepared for the final and Confey had defeated Eadestown a month earlier in the round robin series.

A large crowd was in attendance at the well prepared Moorefield pitch. Eadestown started well when the tall Eadestown centrefield player Siobhan O’ Sulivan went forward and kicked the first point. This was followed up by points from Grace Clifford and Leah Purcell. Confey are an experienced championship outfit and hit back with points from Aine Gately and two from sister Deirdre Gately to leave the teams level after ten minutes.

Eadestown had a period of dominance and Grace Clifford struck for two goals in quick succession , one of these goals was superbly taken. It was a fast and entertaining game at this stage and Confeys Siofra Daly fired over a point followed up by another from the experienced Aisling Jennings. Four points separated the teams after twenty minutes and up popped Grace Clifford after a good forward movement to slot over a point. Aine Gately playing at centre forward ran at the Eadestown defence and kicked another point. As the first half came to an end Leah Purcell and Aisling Jennings traded points. Half time score Eadestown 2-6: Confey 0-7.

The second half started brightly and Eadestown were first to score with Leah Purcell kicking a free and Brenda Barr a point from thirty yards out. Confey were not going to be defeated easily and Deirdre Gately scored a well taken goal . The game was now in the balance and when the referee awarded Confey a penalty which was converted by Aisling Jennings two points separated the teams with seven minutes remaining.

Eadestown were awarded a free and Leah Purcell secured a point. Captain Aoife Herbert was then on target but then Confey struck back as Aisling Jennings kicked over a point. Eadestown finished well and Grace Clifford and Leah Purcell completed the scoring to leave Eadesown winning by four points. The Eadestown keeper Andrea Jebb had an excellent game and denied Confey a number of goal chances. The entire Eadestown defence were outstanding and curtailed a fast moving Confey attack on many occasions.

It was a very sporting game played by two very well prepared teams.
